This is the view of National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Datuk Razali Ismail. He said though other organisations such as Majlis Amanah Rakyat and the Public Service Department faced similar problems, PTPTN has the largest number of student loan defaulters.
"I am now referred to as the seven billion dollar man," he said today, in reference to the amount owing to PTPTN from students who have since graduated and are now working. He said despite being aware of this trend of not repaying loans, the corporation had yet to come up with a mechanism to ensure repayments. He stressed it was the "social responsibility" of students to repay their loans once they got a job.
"I have been going all over the country appealing to students in universities as far as Sabah to repay their study loans once they had completed their studies," Razali said.According to Razali, the corporation had sent out more than 200,000 reminders this year to students to start repaying their loans.
It was reported today that PTPTN had run out of funds and had to borrow RM2 billion from the Employees' Provident Fund in 2003 to continue providing loans.PTPTN chief executive officer Datuk Othman Jusoh said yesterday that the till was empty because students were not repaying their loans.Graduates owe the Government more than RM7 billion in unpaid student loans since 1997.
